Why a Computer UPS Can’t Protect Theaters

CIS-NC's Choice For APC and Panamax Line Conditioners!

CIS-NC's Choice For APC and Panamax Line Conditioners

Make sure to select a battery backup specifically designed for AV applications.

Power surges and transients occur in all 50 U.S. states. Blackouts, poorly filtered power, and dirty power can interrupt viewing, erase recordings and lose all of the system’s pre-sets. The recordings stored on your media server or DVR can be lost permanently if power is lost at just the wrong moment.

Satellite receivers and cable boxes can lockup, thereby interrupting service. Expensive light bulbs used in projectors and DLP TVs can be damaged when a blackout occurs.

The right battery backup can protect all of those troubles from happening. Many consumers look to their local mass retailer for one of those small, inexpensive battery backups designed for their home computer. While this might work out OK, there’s a good chance it simply won’t work.

Make sure to select a battery backup specifically designed for AV applications. Here are three reasons AV UPS (uninterruptible power supplies) systems offer better home theater protection.

Handling large components
One major difference is the ability to handle the unique power requirements of larger components. Network file servers and desktop computers typically have an in-rush current draw (the quick, but dramatic amount of current drawn when the device is turned on) of 60-80 Amps for a few milliseconds. Larger components can draw into the 100s of Amps (peak to peak) for several milliseconds on startup.

Computer UPS units are simply not designed to handle this large power draw. This can easily overwhelm the inverter of the UPS, causing it to shut down suddenly and unexpectedly. It is even quite possible for the UPS to be damaged by this overload condition. AV UPSs are designed to handle these large current draws common with big screen TVs and larger amplifiers.

Isolated Noise Filtration
Dedicated isolated noise filtration is another key aspect of AV equipment that is not typically available in computer UPS systems. Electrical Magnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) generally have little impact on computer gear unless its presence is extremely large (and/or the equipment is poorly shielded).  For this reason, traditional computer battery backup products contain very small EMI/RFI filters.

If severe enough, EMI/RFI can negatively impact sound and video quality. Properly designed filters, as found in higher-end AV power protection units, can reduce or eliminate this interference so that consumer’s receive the best home theater experience their system can provide.

Too Noisy
Traditional computer UPS systems are too noisy, electrically and audibly, for AV equipment. Light emitting diodes (LED) and visual alarms that are typical of computer UPS systems can also detract from the viewing and listening experience. On the other hand, AV specific models are usually designed to be as quiet and visually unobtrusive as possible.

Audible alarms are “OFF” by default and LEDs can be dimmed or turned “OFF” altogether; similarly, liquid crystal displays (LCD) can be dimmed or turned “OFF”. AV cooling fans are micro-processor controlled with variable speed designed to run only when absolutely necessary.

Furthermore, the industrial design is ideal for placement in home entertainment centers (shelf or rackmount) or AV racks.  Also, the UPS batteries are accessible through the front panel so the unit does not need to be removed from the equipment stack.

A true AV-specific battery backup can be a great complement to your system. Knowing you are protected from all the dangers and hassles of today’s unpredictable power grid should give you peace of mind so you can enjoy your home theater experience without interruption.

What Display is Best for My Viewing Distance?

Is a plasma a good idea for Steve’s 15-20 foot viewing distance?

Q. I am looking at purchasing a Samsung PN63B590 for my living room. I’m going plasma because of the size, and my viewing distance is 15-20 feet. Is there a better option that you know of for the same price range? – Steve, Indiana

A. Steve, my suggestion, considering your viewing distance, is to go with a two-piece projection system.

I searched around and found an Epson Home Cinema 8100 1080p Projector for $1,500. I also found an Elite Screen 100-inch EZ Frame CineGrey Screen for $385. This system gives you a much bigger screen for less than $2,000.

The 100-inch CineGrey from Elite helps color saturation, black levels and contrast in rooms with ambient light. The Epson projector is a highly-rated, affordable 1080p projector that should be bright enough to fill a 100-inch screen with some ambient light.

A plasma will do certain things better than a two-piece system. But with the combination of Epson’s 1080p resolution and the gray screen, you should get a good picture from it and an even better picture when the lights are off.

One thing both plasmas and projection systems need is control of a room’s ambient light. LCD TVs are brighter and custom installers tend to use them more in a bright room. Where you’re looking at a plasma, you’ll need some control of the light.

If you buy this system, look into Lutron’s Maestro IR dimmer. It’s $40 at Home Depot, installs in a few minutes, and controls your lights, saving you just as much money as a CFL bulb.

If this system is too complex, talk to a local custom installer. He may have some basic packages that he could install for you.

Samsung Bows 3D LED TV

CIS: Charlotte, NC's Source For 3D Theater Electronics!

Samsung formally kicked off the global launch of four 3D HD LED TVs during a press conference here Tuesday, and revealed plans for a major advertising and promotional campaign to support the category.

The event brought DreamWorks Animation SKG’s Jeffrey Katzenberg to Samsung’s New York City showroom to announce the next part of a strategic alliance between the movie studio and the Korean electronics maker, which involves an exclusive offering of the “Shrek” film series in its entirety in 3D Blu-ray for the first time.

Samsung’s multimillion-dollar national advertising and marketing blitz will include extensive TV support – which began with a teaser spot during the 2010 Academy Awards telecast – a coast-to-coast in-store merchandising program employing 5,000 3D merchandising kiosks, and a “3D starter kit” including two pair of 3D glasses and a copy of DreamWork’s 3D Blu-ray movie “Monsters vs. Aliens” for the purchase of a Samsung 3D TV and a Samsung 3D Blu-ray player or 3D Blu-ray home-theater system.

In addition, Katzenberg announced that during the second half of 2010, DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek” film series will be available in 3D Blu-ray for Samsung home entertainment systems.

“Audiences across the globe can’t get enough of 3D,” Katzenberg said at the event. “It is, quite frankly, the entertainment revolution of our time.”

Samsung will have 17 3D products overall in 2010, “making it the broadest 3D entertainment lineup in world,” said Tim Baxter, Samsung Electronics America president.

The company will offer 3D in three LCD TV series, including the 7000, 8000 and 9000 series, and will offer the capability in two plasma series, including the 7000 and 8000. Plasma models will be available in the 50-inch, 58-inch and 63-inch screen sizes in both series.

Screen sizes for LCD models will include 40, 46, 55 and 65 inches. Four of the 3D LCD models are in select stores now.

Pricing will range from a $1,699 suggested retail for the 46-inch 240Hz CCFL backlit LN46C750 (due in May) to $6,999 for the 55-inch 240Hz LED backlit UN55C9000 (due in April); the latter ships with a touchscreen LCD remote control with built-in Wi-Fi capability.

The UN46C7000 ($2,599) and UN55C7000 ($3,299) are shipping now.

Samsung has dubbed its “holistic” U.S. marketing campaign “Dedicated to Wonder.” Baxter said it will employ television advertising and the first 3D Imax cinema advertising for a consumer electronics brand, beginning in April.

The effort utilizes a renowned production team, including the Oscar-winning director of photography Mauro Fiore.
