Would You Shop at Circuit City?

CIS is Charlotte's "Big Box" Alternative for Consumer Electronics!Report says company “contemplating a brick-and-mortar rebirth.”

The days of calling Circuit City a defunct big-box “store” might be coming to an end.

Systemax, which purchased the Circuit City brand in May 2009 and relaunched the company online, is “contemplating a brick-and-mortar rebirth,” according to Dow Jones Newswires.

Systemax bought and revived CompUSA, one of many failed electronics retailers, and now plans to open stores in Houston, Chicago and other major markets after successfully testing stores in Florida. There currently are 34 CompUSA stores.

Could Circuit City follow the same plan?

“Recession hurts, but it also creates opportunities that would not have existed otherwise,” said Systemax Chief Executive Richard Leeds.

“We have a tremendous amount of excitement around our company now because of these acquisitions. We picked up two iconic retail brands for well under $50 million. That to me is the bargain of the century.”

Stars Come Out for Samsung 3D LED TV Launch

Times Square rocked with a surprise concert by the Black Eyed Peas, who will soon be featured in 3D concert footage exclusively from Samsung.

We know James Cameron is pretty high on 3D. Apparently the Black Eyed Peas are into it as well. And celebs such as Hilary Duff and Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg were willing to give 3D a test drive too.

Yes, there was plenty of celebrity muscle rolled out by Samsung as it celebrated the launch of its 3D LED TVs this week in New York. The company also provided some other relevant announcements for people holding their breath about the amount of actual 3D content being made available.

If you’re a fan of the animated hit franchise Shrek, keep an eye out for it in 3D Blu-ray as Samsung has teamed with DreamWorks Animation to try and propel 3D Blu-ray content onto shelves. No word on when the trilogy will hit, but we do know that the tandem has already worked on getting out DreamWorks’ Monsters vs. Aliens in the format this year.

And if you’re a fan of the Black Eyed Peas and are a current or potential Samsung customer, you can look forward to seeing Fergie and Co. up close and personal as the manufacturer announced it will release 3D footage of the band’s The E.N.D. World Tour exclusively to Samsung customers.

Cameron, of 3D hit Avatar fame among his other blockbuster movies, was on hand with Vince Pace as their production company Cameron/Pace filmed and streamed the Times Square event to the web. We’re guessing Samsung didn’t have to twist Cameron’s arm for another 3D appearance to help push the format.

Samsung’s 7000 series LED 3D TVs have hit store shelves already in 46- and 55-inch models, and will be followed by 8000 and 9000 series later this year.

Samsung Bows 3D LED TV

CIS: Charlotte, NC's Source For 3D Theater Electronics!

Samsung formally kicked off the global launch of four 3D HD LED TVs during a press conference here Tuesday, and revealed plans for a major advertising and promotional campaign to support the category.

The event brought DreamWorks Animation SKG’s Jeffrey Katzenberg to Samsung’s New York City showroom to announce the next part of a strategic alliance between the movie studio and the Korean electronics maker, which involves an exclusive offering of the “Shrek” film series in its entirety in 3D Blu-ray for the first time.

Samsung’s multimillion-dollar national advertising and marketing blitz will include extensive TV support – which began with a teaser spot during the 2010 Academy Awards telecast – a coast-to-coast in-store merchandising program employing 5,000 3D merchandising kiosks, and a “3D starter kit” including two pair of 3D glasses and a copy of DreamWork’s 3D Blu-ray movie “Monsters vs. Aliens” for the purchase of a Samsung 3D TV and a Samsung 3D Blu-ray player or 3D Blu-ray home-theater system.

In addition, Katzenberg announced that during the second half of 2010, DreamWorks Animation’s “Shrek” film series will be available in 3D Blu-ray for Samsung home entertainment systems.

“Audiences across the globe can’t get enough of 3D,” Katzenberg said at the event. “It is, quite frankly, the entertainment revolution of our time.”

Samsung will have 17 3D products overall in 2010, “making it the broadest 3D entertainment lineup in world,” said Tim Baxter, Samsung Electronics America president.

The company will offer 3D in three LCD TV series, including the 7000, 8000 and 9000 series, and will offer the capability in two plasma series, including the 7000 and 8000. Plasma models will be available in the 50-inch, 58-inch and 63-inch screen sizes in both series.

Screen sizes for LCD models will include 40, 46, 55 and 65 inches. Four of the 3D LCD models are in select stores now.

Pricing will range from a $1,699 suggested retail for the 46-inch 240Hz CCFL backlit LN46C750 (due in May) to $6,999 for the 55-inch 240Hz LED backlit UN55C9000 (due in April); the latter ships with a touchscreen LCD remote control with built-in Wi-Fi capability.

The UN46C7000 ($2,599) and UN55C7000 ($3,299) are shipping now.

Samsung has dubbed its “holistic” U.S. marketing campaign “Dedicated to Wonder.” Baxter said it will employ television advertising and the first 3D Imax cinema advertising for a consumer electronics brand, beginning in April.

The effort utilizes a renowned production team, including the Oscar-winning director of photography Mauro Fiore.
