Would You Shop at Circuit City?

CIS is Charlotte's "Big Box" Alternative for Consumer Electronics!Report says company “contemplating a brick-and-mortar rebirth.”

The days of calling Circuit City a defunct big-box “store” might be coming to an end.

Systemax, which purchased the Circuit City brand in May 2009 and relaunched the company online, is “contemplating a brick-and-mortar rebirth,” according to Dow Jones Newswires.

Systemax bought and revived CompUSA, one of many failed electronics retailers, and now plans to open stores in Houston, Chicago and other major markets after successfully testing stores in Florida. There currently are 34 CompUSA stores.

Could Circuit City follow the same plan?

“Recession hurts, but it also creates opportunities that would not have existed otherwise,” said Systemax Chief Executive Richard Leeds.

“We have a tremendous amount of excitement around our company now because of these acquisitions. We picked up two iconic retail brands for well under $50 million. That to me is the bargain of the century.”

What Display is Best for My Viewing Distance?

Is a plasma a good idea for Steve’s 15-20 foot viewing distance?

Q. I am looking at purchasing a Samsung PN63B590 for my living room. I’m going plasma because of the size, and my viewing distance is 15-20 feet. Is there a better option that you know of for the same price range? – Steve, Indiana

A. Steve, my suggestion, considering your viewing distance, is to go with a two-piece projection system.

I searched around and found an Epson Home Cinema 8100 1080p Projector for $1,500. I also found an Elite Screen 100-inch EZ Frame CineGrey Screen for $385. This system gives you a much bigger screen for less than $2,000.

The 100-inch CineGrey from Elite helps color saturation, black levels and contrast in rooms with ambient light. The Epson projector is a highly-rated, affordable 1080p projector that should be bright enough to fill a 100-inch screen with some ambient light.

A plasma will do certain things better than a two-piece system. But with the combination of Epson’s 1080p resolution and the gray screen, you should get a good picture from it and an even better picture when the lights are off.

One thing both plasmas and projection systems need is control of a room’s ambient light. LCD TVs are brighter and custom installers tend to use them more in a bright room. Where you’re looking at a plasma, you’ll need some control of the light.

If you buy this system, look into Lutron’s Maestro IR dimmer. It’s $40 at Home Depot, installs in a few minutes, and controls your lights, saving you just as much money as a CFL bulb.

If this system is too complex, talk to a local custom installer. He may have some basic packages that he could install for you.

Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for March 16

Some animation, for kids and adults alike, such as The Princess and the Frog and another season of South Park, lead the way this week.

What video content looks best in Blu-ray format? It’s tough to go wrong with stunning nature video. Usually broadcast TV shows are very clean. I’d still say it’s very difficult to outdo animation – look no further than Pixar, especially.

Unfortunately there aren’t any new Pixar releases this week, but there are some animated efforts that ought to sparkle on your combination of big screen and Blu-ray to highlight this week’s releases.

I’m partial to Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, which not only has the typical solid colors and sharp details, but also has a wonderful New Orleans style jazz soundtrack to get you and your kids dancing.

Astro Boy is another of this week’s releases that should look dazzling, and even has the wider 2.39:1 original aspect ratio, along with voice talents like Samuel L. Jackson, Charlize Theron and Nicolas Cage. And if you still want to watch some animation once the kids are in bed, the 13th season of South Park features its long-standing very basic animation to accompany the mature jokes and plots.

Fast-paced action movies are also en vogue this week, with the likes of Armored and Ninja Assassin sure to pump your theater full of testosterone.

And if that’s not enough to get it rockin’, well you can pop in the latest concert video from The White Stripes – Under Great White Northern Lights – that follows Jack and Meg on their 2007 tour stops in Canada.

Here are all the releases for this week (slideshow synopses and schedule courtesy of Blu-ray.com):
