Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for March 16

Some animation, for kids and adults alike, such as The Princess and the Frog and another season of South Park, lead the way this week.

What video content looks best in Blu-ray format? It’s tough to go wrong with stunning nature video. Usually broadcast TV shows are very clean. I’d still say it’s very difficult to outdo animation – look no further than Pixar, especially.

Unfortunately there aren’t any new Pixar releases this week, but there are some animated efforts that ought to sparkle on your combination of big screen and Blu-ray to highlight this week’s releases.

I’m partial to Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, which not only has the typical solid colors and sharp details, but also has a wonderful New Orleans style jazz soundtrack to get you and your kids dancing.

Astro Boy is another of this week’s releases that should look dazzling, and even has the wider 2.39:1 original aspect ratio, along with voice talents like Samuel L. Jackson, Charlize Theron and Nicolas Cage. And if you still want to watch some animation once the kids are in bed, the 13th season of South Park features its long-standing very basic animation to accompany the mature jokes and plots.

Fast-paced action movies are also en vogue this week, with the likes of Armored and Ninja Assassin sure to pump your theater full of testosterone.

And if that’s not enough to get it rockin’, well you can pop in the latest concert video from The White Stripes – Under Great White Northern Lights – that follows Jack and Meg on their 2007 tour stops in Canada.

Here are all the releases for this week (slideshow synopses and schedule courtesy of Blu-ray.com):

4 Tips to Approaching Custom Cabinetry

If you’re looking for a special piece to store your A/V gear or enhance a theater or other electronics installation, keep these points in mind.

Can’t find the right cabinet for your audio/video gear? Consider having one custom-made.

A custom cabinetmaker can build a piece of furniture to your exact specifications, providing you something totally unique. Include more than your preference for maple, though.

As cabinetmaker Mike Schieber of La Crosse, Wis.-based Real Wood Products explains, there are a number of other details to share and decisions to make before construction of your cabinet can begin:

Where do you want it? The current size, shape and layout of the room will often determine the best spot for an entertainment cabinet. Your cabinetmaker needs to know where that spot is so he can design a piece with the proper dimensions (width, height, and depth). Your new cabinet will look as if it has always been a part of the space.

Want match something? Would you describe your living room as traditional, contemporary or another style? Is there a coffee table, a fireplace hearth or crown molding you want the cabinet to complement? Be sure to tell your cabinetmaker so he can pick the perfect wood, stain and hardware.

What will you put in it? There’s more to home entertainment than a big TV. You’ll need components like DVD players, media servers, surround-sound receivers, as well as speakers and amplifiers. You’ll need to decide whether you want your cabinet to hold everything, or just a few components. Your decision will determine the amount of shelving the cabinetmaker puts in, as well as the overall size and shape of the cabinet.

Think about the future. Chances are, the TV you select today will not be the same TV you’ll want five years from now. Upgrades are a fact of home electronics life, and your cabinet should be designed to adapt to those changes. This might include putting removable trim around the TV cavity. The trim will hide the space around the TV you own today. When you upgrade to a larger set, the trim can be removed. Having extra shelves and storage compartments is helpful as well.

Are Plasma TVs Still Alive?

LG and Panasonic are trying to revive plasma displays.

CRT TVs. Laserdisc. VHS. Beta. CED (bet you have to look that one up).

All of these once represented a state-of-the-art technology, but have since made their way to that big home theater in the sky.

Many consumers think plasma displays also are dead, or are on their way out. But plasmas shouldn’t be relegated to the book-ends of the display market just yet, at least not as far as LG Electronics and Panasonic are concerned.

LG is releasing eight new plasmas, including its INFINIA line. Trying to kick the stereotype that plasmas are thick and heavy, the INFINIA series includes a 60-inch model that’s only 2-inches thick and only 95 pounds. These models will feature:

-LG NetCast for access to Internet streaming media like YouTube, Netflix, Pandora, and more
-“Wireless Media Hub” design that allows components, such as Blu-ray players, to be connected to a hub that wirelessly transmits the signal up to 90 feet
-THX certification
-Light-sensing automatic calibration
Panasonic will release more than 20 models, including four 3D-capable TVs that range from 50-65 inches. The 3D sets, which won both “Best In Television” and “Best In Show” at CES 2010, will include one pair of 3D glasses. Other features include THX certification, NeoPDP picture enhancements, and Viera Cast network streaming.

Plasma won’t take back the middle of the flat-panel TV market, but it will look to continue to be the meat of many high-end display lines and an important part of the push for 3D in the home.
