Sonic Partners with RealD, DTS; CinemaNow Gets a Lot More Interesting

Sonic Solutions announced new partnerships with RealD and DTS for premium streaming content.
In separate press releases, Sonic Solutions announced today two strategic partnerships that will make its online streaming services a lot more interesting.
The first announcement brought to light an alliance with RealD, a leading licenser of stereoscopic 3D technologies. The partnership is said to bring home 3D technology for both personal content capture/publication in Roxio software as well as premium studio content through RoxioNow and compatible streaming services.
“Our next-generation 3D cinema technology is delivering a premium 3D entertainment experience,” said Michael V. Lewis, chairman and CEO of RealD. “We welcome this opportunity to join with Sonic, a leading developer of applications for personal and premium content enjoyment, to bring multi-dimensional video to life on home PCs and in consumers’ living rooms.”
In a second announcement, Sonic let fly a similar partnership with Digital Theater Systems (DTS), provider of home theater surround-sound encoding and compression technologies. The two companies plan to bring 5.1 surround sound and high-bitrate stereo sound to Sonic’s various online video streaming services, including those that are part of the CinemaNow brand, including Blockbuster and Best Buy’s upcoming streaming service.
“Best Buy is always looking to meet the needs of our customers by bringing them the best technology, products, content, and services,” said Ryan Pirozzi, director of movies for Best Buy. “Sonic’s partnership with DTS falls in line with our goal of delivering exciting solutions in home entertainment and helps provide high-quality experiences across a broad range of connected devices at a critical junction in the evolution of digital delivery.”
This combination of RealD 3D technology and DTS 5.1 surround sound may make Blockbuster and Best Buy’s CinemaNow services extremely compelling for home theater enthusiasts. Netflix’s extremely popular Watch Instantly service is currently handcuffed to 2D 720p video (with most being lower resolution SD) and stereo sound. A wide selection of 3D capable movies with DTS 5.1 surround sound would give any service a big leg up with enthusiasts. With the current state of 3D content (nearly non-existent), it might give 3D display sales a nice kick-in-the-pants as well.

3D Upgrade Paralyzes DirecTV Boxes
DirecTV customers woke up to gray screens on Tuesday after an automatic update crippled HD DVRs.
You didn’t need a tweet from DirecTV to learn about an an automatic update that crippled HD DVRs overnight.
By morning, frantic customers and loved ones were already doing what they could to reboot the boxes, or were calling their custom electronics (CE) pros with tales of woe.
“My wife called as I was on the way to work this morning. Kids were up and couldn’t watch Curious George,” wrote FINS on remotecentral.com.
On the same site, edizzle reported: “It is the update for 3D. all 5 of my boxes were frozen and i have already fielded dozens of calls. most were fine after one RBR (red button reset), some required two. 3D on 6/11 channel 106. get your goggles ready.”
Indeed, DirecTV subscribers are waiting in anticipation of 3D World Cup soccer action that kicks off on June 11 on ESPN 3D.
Added this from a CE pro with the user name Fiasco: “I’m going out to a house tomorrow afternoon to fix their DTV boxes (they have 7).” We’ve certainly seen our share of such widespread HD DVR installations for individual homes here at Electronic House.
DirecTV posted this message on Twitter earlier this morning:
HDDVR customers: If your HDDVR will NOT power on, unplug the unit from the wall, wait 15sec, then replug, & repeat 1x to restore service.
That seemed to do the trick, except for remotecentral reader SignatureSV, who got a “gray screen of death lol” even after four RBRs and two unplugs.

Channel D Pure Music Bolsters iTunes’ Performance
C.I.S. - We Are Here To Answer Your Home Technology Questions!
Computer audio enthusiasts that want additional performance from their computer-based systems can run Channel D’s new Pure Music software on top of Apple’s iTunes to play back music files at their native resolutions.
Channel D, a developer of audio software solutions for Apple Macintosh computers, which includes its Pure Vinyl transcription, archiving and record editing software, recently introduced a new high-resolution digital audio playback software program for Apple iTunes.
According to the company, Pure Music is based on its Pure Vinyl audio playback engine and it automatically docks with Apple’s free iTunes digital jukebox software to handle music playback with a high-resolution playback engine. Channel D says that when iTunes and Pure Music are run together, iTunes will act as the database and playlist organizer, while its software leverages the user’s familiarity of iTunes functions such as track selection, music library navigation, and more. Channel D adds that when these programs are combined with a high-resolution sound card or DAC, Pure Music will deliver a dynamic and detailed audio playback.
Robert Robinson, director of engineering for Channel D, notes that one of the major advantages of the new software release is that it will playback audio files at their natural resolution without downgrading the bitrate and sampling frequency of those files.
“Pure Music offers many benefits over iTunes alone. Foremost, iTunes plays all audio tracks at the sample rate detected when launched. If this were 44.1kHz [CD quality], then all high resolution audio tracks [up to 192kHz/24-bit, which can be purchased and downloaded on the Internet] would be downsampled and played in a CD format, diminishing playback quality. On the other hand, Pure Music will automatically play high-resolution audio tracks at their native sample rate [if supported by the connected sound card or DAC]. This capability was previously only available in costly ($995) audio playback software, but now is available with Pure Music for just $129.”
Channel D continues by stating Pure Music offers more than native file type resolution playback by also offering features such as Memory Play, real-time high resolution upsampling of CD tracks, a 64-bit internal signal path, dithered volume control, subwoofer crossover, multichannel support, audio processing plug-ins, CoreAudio Hog Mode playback, high resolution audio streaming, precision signal metering, reverse play, and it works with all iTunes-supported audio formats, including but not limited to Apple Lossless, AIFF, Wave, AAC and MP3.
