Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for February 2

godfather300A slew of classic titles get star Blu-ray treatment this week, like The Godfather, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and more.

This week is Oscar nomination week, so apparently Hollywood decided to ride that theme for the releases on Blu-ray disc as well.

Several Academy Award winners in the Best Picture and other categories are arriving, either as first-time appearances in the high-definition format or remastered double-dip efforts that we hope offer a little more than the first time around.

If you’re into some classics, this is a great week for you to purchase that Blu-ray player and see these films in their most pristine detail yet on home video (a couple we’ve seen on HD DVD, but here they are again).

Paramount has given its “Sapphire” treatment to the first two movies in Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy, meaning the restoration should be improved and the extras should be plentiful for those two Oscar winners of the early ‘70s.

Speaking of the number 70, that’s the anniversary edition of Gone with the Wind. The timeless classic is presented in its traditional 1.37:1 aspect ratio, but also handed a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack to go with a Dolby mono version. Casablanca, which already looked pretty stunning on HD DVD, also goes Blu this week.

If it’s more recent classics you’re into, iconic directors Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood offer up Gangs of New York and Mystic River, respectively, in the format. We’ve seen “Gangs” before, but it came with lackluster reviews regarding the video transfer, so hopefully this remaster went through more HD rigors.

Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for January 26

this-is-it300A few musical picks, like Michael Jackson’s This Is It and Soul Power, highlight this week’s releases on Blu-ray.

Usually we focus on the movie releases in our weekly Blu-ray spotlights. However, this week there are a few engaging musical items that are sure to make your home theater system sing.

This Is It is a must for Michael Jackson fans. He was supposed to perform an astounding 50-show run in London, and before passing away last year a good amount of his rehearsal footage was captured on film, with this documentary being the result. All of that musical goodness through Blu-ray can be heard in uncompressed DTS-HD Master Audio, so you can soak in one last glimpse of the king of pop.

Another performance that you may not have known about is also on showcase this week as it arrives on Blu-ray. The disc is called Soul Power, and it is a concert film and more, documenting performances that coincided with the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle that pitted Muhammad Ali and George Foreman (go rent When We Were Kings for much more). James Brown kicks things off … ‘nuff said.

For another bit of musical attitude, check out the original version of Fame (1980) that’s out this week. You may know many of the songs even if you’ve never seen the film, but here’s all the singing and dancing in full Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound to light up your home theater.

Here’s the complete list of releases for this week, courtesy of Blu-ray.com:

50% of Consumers Want 3D Home Theater

bluray_3d_specQuixel Research also says consumers are willing to pay for 3D glasses and want 3D channels from cable/satellite providers.

According to a recent survey from Quixel Research, 50 percent of consumers want 3D home theaters and about 80 percent have already watched something in 3D.

Quixel’s second annual 3D study, “3D Displays and Content 2009,” (pdf) surveyed 1,000 HDTV owners to get their opinions on 3D technology. The data also shows consumers:
Are willing to pay for 3D glasses
Want to receive 3D programming from their service provider
Prefer to watch 3D content from their cable or satellite provider vs. buying Blu-ray/DVD
“Consumers not only prefer to receive 3D content from their cable or satellite provider, but they are willing to pay more for a 3D movie channel,” says Tamaryn Pratt, Quixel Research principal. “Consumers are very familiar with recent 3D technology and those who have seen a 3D movie in the [past] 12 months are interested in owning a 3D TV even if it requires glasses.”

The study also found the following:

3D Product Awareness: Seventy-eight percent of respondents have had a 3D experience.
3D Interest/Purchasing: Half of those surveyed are interested in watching 3D at home, with those who have seen a 3D movie recently more interested in purchasing.
3D Timing: More than one third of those surveyed expect 3D TV within 12 months
3D Content: A significant majority would be interested in changing their content provider in order to receive 3D content.
3D Opinions: Nearly two-thirds say 3D is a group experience.
3D Glasses: Consumers are willing to pay for 3D glasses but don’t expect to pay twice as much for two pair.
3D Brands: Comcast was in the top three trusted 3D brands along with Samsung and Sony.
