4 Tips for Cleaning Screens

C.I.S. - Charlotte, NC's Home for Samsung TV Installation and Service!

Here are some tips and products to keep your displays, cell phones and remotes controls streak-free and spotless.

With spring just around the corner, it’s time to clear away the cobwebs and get your house back in shape.

In addition to windows, walls and floors, your spring cleaning project should also include TV screens, iPods and remote controls.

What’s the best way to de-grime them? Here are a few products we’ve run across as well as tips from custom electronics professionals.

1. “Most cleaners—even soap and water—are either too harsh or leave water spots on the surface,” says Joshua Huffman of RG Convergence Technologies in Raleigh, N.C.

“Keeping this in mind, we use microfiber cleaning cloths from Blue Wonder.” They’re a little pricey at $6.50 a cloth [check site for current price range], but they’re reusable and won’t scratch the surface of the screen (www.bluewondercloth.com).

2. You can protect your remote from gunk build-up by fitting a clear cover over it. If your kids’ messy hands to find the remote, you can easily wipe away the grime with a sanitary wipe or household cleaner.

3. Jayson Small of Adobe Cinema & Automation, Mashpee, Mass., recommends laying an anti-glare film ($15 from the Apple store) on the screen of your iPod, iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. “This will protect the screen from scratches and can easily be cleaned with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth.”

 4. Most of us have gone through a cell phone or two due to water damage. A product called the Bheestie Bag ($20, www.bheestie.com) promises to dry out electronic devices. You just take out the battery, drop the device into the bag and let it sit overnight. The company says it can be used for products such as iPods, too. Water absorbing beads pull out the moisture. Does it work? We haven’t tried it, so we’d love to hear from someone who has. Email us.

Top 10 Blu-ray Releases for March 16

Some animation, for kids and adults alike, such as The Princess and the Frog and another season of South Park, lead the way this week.

What video content looks best in Blu-ray format? It’s tough to go wrong with stunning nature video. Usually broadcast TV shows are very clean. I’d still say it’s very difficult to outdo animation – look no further than Pixar, especially.

Unfortunately there aren’t any new Pixar releases this week, but there are some animated efforts that ought to sparkle on your combination of big screen and Blu-ray to highlight this week’s releases.

I’m partial to Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, which not only has the typical solid colors and sharp details, but also has a wonderful New Orleans style jazz soundtrack to get you and your kids dancing.

Astro Boy is another of this week’s releases that should look dazzling, and even has the wider 2.39:1 original aspect ratio, along with voice talents like Samuel L. Jackson, Charlize Theron and Nicolas Cage. And if you still want to watch some animation once the kids are in bed, the 13th season of South Park features its long-standing very basic animation to accompany the mature jokes and plots.

Fast-paced action movies are also en vogue this week, with the likes of Armored and Ninja Assassin sure to pump your theater full of testosterone.

And if that’s not enough to get it rockin’, well you can pop in the latest concert video from The White Stripes – Under Great White Northern Lights – that follows Jack and Meg on their 2007 tour stops in Canada.

Here are all the releases for this week (slideshow synopses and schedule courtesy of Blu-ray.com):

Clash of the Gods: Complete Season 1

Stars Come Out for Samsung 3D LED TV Launch

Times Square rocked with a surprise concert by the Black Eyed Peas, who will soon be featured in 3D concert footage exclusively from Samsung.

We know James Cameron is pretty high on 3D. Apparently the Black Eyed Peas are into it as well. And celebs such as Hilary Duff and Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg were willing to give 3D a test drive too.

Yes, there was plenty of celebrity muscle rolled out by Samsung as it celebrated the launch of its 3D LED TVs this week in New York. The company also provided some other relevant announcements for people holding their breath about the amount of actual 3D content being made available.

If you’re a fan of the animated hit franchise Shrek, keep an eye out for it in 3D Blu-ray as Samsung has teamed with DreamWorks Animation to try and propel 3D Blu-ray content onto shelves. No word on when the trilogy will hit, but we do know that the tandem has already worked on getting out DreamWorks’ Monsters vs. Aliens in the format this year.

And if you’re a fan of the Black Eyed Peas and are a current or potential Samsung customer, you can look forward to seeing Fergie and Co. up close and personal as the manufacturer announced it will release 3D footage of the band’s The E.N.D. World Tour exclusively to Samsung customers.

Cameron, of 3D hit Avatar fame among his other blockbuster movies, was on hand with Vince Pace as their production company Cameron/Pace filmed and streamed the Times Square event to the web. We’re guessing Samsung didn’t have to twist Cameron’s arm for another 3D appearance to help push the format.

Samsung’s 7000 series LED 3D TVs have hit store shelves already in 46- and 55-inch models, and will be followed by 8000 and 9000 series later this year.
