Will A/V Receivers Need to Be 3D Compatible?

A/V receivers with HDMI switching could be a hindrance to the adoption of 3D because of their inability to accommodate the necessary extra bandwidth.

A source from the Blu-ray Disc Association told Electronic House and sister publication CE Pro at CES 2010 that a possible speed bump in the road to greater adoption of 3D Blu-ray may not come from the TVs, players or content providers; it may come from A/V receivers and HDMI switching devices.

While HDMI 1.4 is in the specification for 3D Blu-ray, it’s not a requirement for sending a 3D Blu-ray signal from a player to a television. That’s why Sony’s Playstation 3 can be firmware upgraded to be 3D Blu-ray compatible while only having HDMI 1.3 built into its hardware. What is required is a minimum bandwidth allowance in order for the player to send the signal out to the TV.

A source told our publications that many A/V receivers with HDMI switching cannot accommodate the extra bandwidth. In other words, if you use your receiver for HDMI switching, you may not be able to connect it to a 3D Blu-ray player. The source said the BDA may be working with manufacturers to inform them of the bandwidth problem so they can help customers with questions and problems as well as establish a minimum bandwidth floor for receivers that will allow the 3D signal to pass.

One possible workaround the source suggested would be for Blu-ray players to include two HDMI outputs, one that would go directly to the 3D compatible display, and one to take the high-quality Blu-ray audio formats to the receiver.

Sony, Panasonic and Samsung are among those announcing 3D-compatible Blu-ray players at CES 2010.

ESPN Jumping into 3D

The ubiquitous sports network will become the first to have a 3D network, called ESPN 3D.

While it’s not debuting “ESPN Ocho” that popular online columnist Bill Simmons commonly refers to, ubiquitous sports franchise ESPN will be adding to its lineup the first 3D broadcast network, ESPN 3D, it reported today.

The programming will begin June 11 with the initial 2010 FIFA World Cup match between South Africa and Mexico, and continue with a minimum of 85 live sporting events in the first year, according to ESPN/ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer.

The company added that next year’s BCS National Championship Game (ABC took over coverage from Fox this season and will broadcast this week’s Texas-Alabama game), will be produced in 3D, as will particular college basketball and football games, World Cup and Summer X Games.

ESPN has been dabbling in 3D for over two years, the company said, including a USC-Ohio State broadcast shown in movie theaters and at USC’s Galen Center.

We’ve seen a handful of other sporting events recently hit the 3D realm, including NBA All-Star festivities, last year’s BCS championship and a Thursday night NFL game, to somewhat favorable reception.

Of course, those were also broadcast to commercial theaters. Will this be the crack that breaks in the dam to let in a floodgate of 3D to our TVs, which already appears to be steamrolling ahead and into the home?

This Week’s Blu-ray Releases Get ‘Paranormal’

bluray-paranormal300Surprise horror hit ‘Paranormal Activity’ along with CGI pleaser ‘9’ mark this week’s scant Blu-ray releases.

Obviously the studios just figured if you were going to be purchasing some new Blu-rays for your collection or as gifts, you had everything you needed by the end of last week.

In this case, Blu-ray has saved the worst for last, as in this could be the worst release week of the year (though we did pick at least one for our Top 50 Blu-ray Releases of 2009) in the final week of ‘09.

Oh well. If you’re into horror flicks, you won’t be disappointed at least. The low-budget hit Paranormal Activity might make you a little dizzy the way it was filmed, but content-wise it seemed to be more entertaining than the low-budget thriller it was most often compared with, The Blair Witch Project.

The Blu-ray version details include the theatrical version, as well as an unrated version with alternate ending. Audio will keep you engaged, too, with the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack in surround sound.

Another horror movie on tap for this week’s release is Jennifer’s Body, about a demonic cheerleader. As if we haven’t seen that one before. Only this time it stars Megan Fox … in 1080p high-definition, of course.

If you’re more into animation and CGI, you may want to check out 9, which might have been in the theaters for about two weeks in case you missed it. Tim Burton didn’t direct it, but he was a co-producer, and the animation feel of 9 seems to be taken somewhat from Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride films. In other words, very good eye candy.

Here’s the full short list for this week, courtesy of Blu-ray.com:
9 Assembly
Home Front
Jennifer’s Body
The Marine 2
Metallica: Orgullo Pasion y Gloria: Tres Noches en Mexico
Paranormal Activity
A Perfect Getaway
Time Warp: Season 2
Versus
