Samsung delivers precautions to viewers who may be photosensitive, pregnant, tipsy, prone to seizures and more.

People are gaga over 3D TV these days, but it may not be all fun and games for everyone. Display manufacturer Samsung, which recently began shipping its new 3D HDTVs, has posted a medical warning on its website, “Viewing TV Using the 3D Function” (PDF link) to read before you or your child watch 3D.

According to the safety information, for example, “Pregnant women, the elderly, sufferers of serious medical conditions, those who are sleep deprived or under the influence of alcohol should avoid utilising the unit’s 3D functionality.” So you may not want to fill your eyes with that double vision and 3D vision, to paraphrase Foreigner.

The initial warning from Samsung states: “Children and teenagers may be more susceptible to health issues associated with viewing in 3D and should be closely supervised when viewing these images.”

If you’ve ever been through a 3D demonstration, it’s easy to see why Samsung (and presumably other manufacturers that may post similar warnings) wants to ensure it has covered its bases and offered such safety information. Slipping on 3D glasses, plus the initial vision immediately after taking them off, can be rather uncomfortable or headache-inducing if you’re not used to it. I know a demo from Mitsubishi a couple of years ago, while very cool to see, left me a tad queasy afterward.

The ramifications can be very serious. Under the “Photosensitive Seizure Warning and Other Health Risks” section, Samsung points to those who have history of epileptic seizure or stroke when exposed to flashing images or lights, to consult a doctor before using 3D.

Other symptoms to keep in mind that you may experience, notes Samsung, include:

altered vision
lightheadedness
dizziness
involuntary movements such as eye or muscle twitching
confusion
nausea
loss of awareness
convulsions
cramps
disorientation

Especially on that last symptom, Samsung advises: “Accordingly, DO NOT place your TV near open stairwells, cables, balconies, or other objects that can be tripped over, run into, knocked down, broken or fallen over.”

Other than all of that, you’re good to go. Samsung made no warnings about letting your kids watch Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, so that’s on you.

ViewSonic Adds Glasses to Go with Its 3D Projection

The company has introduced its $99 PGD-150 active shutter 3D glasses

Those 3D glasses aren’t going away, so you might as well find a pair that doesn’t make you look too geeky. Good thing the new PGD-150 from ViewSonic appears to be pretty sleek, and even comes with three sizes of custom interchangeable nose pieces so it’s stays comfy with all that 3D viewing you’re going to be engaging in soon.

For one thing, ViewSonic says it made the PGD-150 Active Stereographic 3D shutter glasses with an education setting in mind, so it says the product is “designed for heavy classroom usage and easy cleaning.”

That’s a nice perk, but we’ll be especially interested in how the frames do with home theater viewing when mated to ViewSonic’s own DLP Link 120Hz/3D Ready projectors, especially as more 3D TV and Blu-ray content is introduced.

The company says the glasses are good for viewing at up to 50 feet, which ought to make theater viewing from 10 to 15 feet away pretty darn sharp through the PGD-150’s TN Type LCD shutter and 1,000:1 contrast.

Batteries are included, and expected battery life for the glasses is 70 hours before needing replacement. Also, the build quality features a plastic, dust-proof design, ViewSonic adds, which should guard against the worst your old sofas or theater chairs manage to kick up.

The glasses are out now, with an estimated street price of $99.

C.I.S. - Charlotte NC's 1st Choice For URC Remote Controls & Programming!

MX-6000, MX-5000 and KP-4000 products “will get you to your [iTunes] playlist faster.”

URC has added iTunes control to its Network Series controllers, which include the MX-6000 Color Touch Screen, MX-5000 Wand Touch Screen Remote and KP-4000 In-Wall Touch Screen Keypad.

The Network Series products can control iTunes on any PC, Mac or Apple TV in the house with a wired or wireless connection via Apple’s Airport Express.

A URC Network Series controller will display iTunes cover art and browses and selects all iTunes content. “Without switching to IR control, users can switch from browsing on the TV to personal browsing on the Network Series controller,” URC says.

If you want to control just the volume in iTunes, URC says its controllers will communicate via standard RF and don’t need to be connected to a wireless network.

“This is a breakthrough for iTunes users who are frustrated with the old-fashioned ‘hunt-and-click’ method,” says URC VP of technology Eric Johnson. “We get them to their iTunes Playlists faster.”
